On May 12th, 2022 Scottie Vickers challenged St.  Matthew Catholic School to get outside and walk for Hospice awareness.

St. Matts sure "stepped up" for the challenge as every student in the school got outside to see how far they could walk in about an hour's time. Students were encouraged to bring a toonie for the Compassionate Care Hospice Society and raised nearly $400! Great job St. Matts!

Walk for Hospice 2021

Week long Event

May 15th- May 22nd

This year we welcome longtime Hospice Supporter Ron Scottie Vickers who will be completing a 50 km hike to raise money for CCHS on May 22nd!

Ron Scottie Vickers

Hospice Hike 2021

Ronnie Scottie Vickers is a member of the British Nordic Walking Association and also a proud member of the Masonic Lodge Lochearn # 151 of Rocky Mountain House.

Ron Vickers, who is known to RMH residents as “Scottie," has been a great advocate for Hospice Care for many years. Scottie also has a great love for Nordic Walking. He took up the sport at the age of 69 and has been completing marathons ever since. You can often find Scottie hiking along the streets and paths of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta during his Nordic Hike Training sessions.

Nordic Walking, which dates back to the 1960’s, was developed by the Finnish Olympic Cross Country Ski Team, who devised a way to do dryland training in the summer to keep their fitness levels up. You’ll often see Scottie using the Nordic Walking Poles which were created similar to ski poles, which helps to propel walkers on hard surfaces, using their upper and lower body to get more of a full body workout. Scottie has been using Nordic Walking as his personal fitness program since 2015.

It wasn’t long until Scottie realized he could combine his love of Nordic Walk with his devotion to Hospice Palliative Care. Scottie Vickers teamed up with Red Deer Hospice and entered into Red Deer’s Woody’s Marathon over the past few years in order to raise money for their much needed hospice care. This year Scottie will be partaking in the Compassionate Care Hospice Society (2016) Walk for Hospice by enduring a 50 km Nordic Ultramarathon, on the outskirts of Rocky Mountain House, on May 22, 2021. This will be with the support of the Rocky Masons and CCHS volunteer members. All money raised will be donated directly to the Compassionate Care Hospice Society (2016) in RMH.

A little bit about the Freemasons: this society dates back the 17th century and is a fraternal organization of men who have the belief of a supreme being and trying to do good for the betterment of mankind. There are many Masonic Lodges throughout Canada and the world, with one settled in the Town of Rocky Mountain House. An example of the kindness objectives that the masonry stands by in Alberta, would be the support they give towards education each year. Each lodge, through donation of its members, donates to the Education Bursary Fund for students who may face financial challenges when it comes to post-secondary. This, among many other examples of support that the freemasons provide to their community, is why Scottie Vickers chooses to take part in the organization. CCHS is so happy and grateful to work alongside the Rocky Masons this year during this fundraiser.

If you wish to sponsor or pledge towards Scottie Vickers Ultramarathon, you can do so by E-Transfer, Mail, or pledge forms that can be found in the Compassionate Care Hospice Society Office. A fundraising page is also be set up on CanadaHelps.org with proceeds going towards CCHS.

CCHS Walk For Hospice

2021

We invite you all to come join us this year for our annual Compassionate Care WALK FOR HOSPICE.  This year, (in order to keep everyone safe and to abide by the set Alberta Health Restrictions), we will be running this event a little bit differently. The walk will take place outside starting from May 15th to May 22nd, along the bike path! Walkers are invited to choose whatever day, time, and distance that works for them!

So grab your family, kids, spouses , grandparents and head out onto the 5 km walking trail around Rocky for some fresh air.

This year we encourage you to bring along a camera to take pictures while visiting the 5 landmarks placed throughout the walking path during your walk! Think of it as a picture scavenger hunt.... fun for all ages !

You can participate with the scavenger hunt one of two ways:

Either upload your pictures to our Facebook page at:

Compassionate Care Hospice Society | Facebook

  or

By text to our office cellphone line:

403-895-4030

(Please send photos together along with a team name!)

We will then upload the photos onto our website so everyone can see the participants!

So come on down the week of May 15th-May 22nd and strike a pose, make a pyramid, or just show us your BIG smiles.
